The Montego engine is open again....
Unfortunately at the car cruise I attended last month my valve cover gasket went...and then oil went all over. So I had to take off the Valve Covers last night. Looks like I might need to do some adjust too, the side that had the gasket go bad has probably 7 loose rocker arms. Sorry pic is blurry but the best I could do, flash wasn't working on phone due to low battery.
ALSO shameless plug: Selling a pair of 302 5.0 E7 Mustang Heads. Supposedly have upgraded Valves/Springs if you are in the Metro Detroit area check 'em out! I decided not to add them to the Montego project. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Damn, if I was in the area, I'd take them. They've got to flow better than the stock 289 heads.

That's why I got them for the Montego, though I don't think I'm going that far with the build on the motor, so I might as well sell them and apply that cash to the exhaust. You just have to plug the emission ports and bolt em on!
Where are you from?
Update on the exhaust for you btw: I got a deal from advance auto parts for $50 off an order. I believe I am getting 2 Flowmaster Super 44s. I called my local shop and got an estimate on the exhaust system and get this! The mechanic calls me back and says he has some long tube headers that will fit my car perfect that he's pulling off his Mustang with a 351Windsor next week and I can have them for $50 bucks. They just didn't fit quite how he wanted on the 351 (taller deck on the motor I guess, and less space in a Mustang for long tubes anyhow). How about that, long tube headers for $50 and two Super 44's for $113. That's a lot of parts for $163 in my opinion!

I'm in Washington State, so shipping might end up being almost as much as the heads. I've got the bigger valves in my heads, but that doesn't make up for tiny exhaust ports.
That is an awesome deal on the exhaust! I'm currently pining for some headers myself, but 351 headers more than likely wouldn't fit on my car. I bet they'd hang down another inch and no amount of power steering lowering bracket would help clearancing.
![]() 08/09/2013 at 11:44 |
|
Haha yeah I was hoping you'd say Ohio or something and I could meet halfway. I don't think I'm meeting halfway for Washington State!!!
Yea I'm loving the deal on the exhaust. He's going to charge 250-300 for the full install of everything. so I'm paying 163 for parts the 250 or so is for the time and 4 pipes (header to muffler, muffler to back of car x2). He offered turn downs or out the side for only 175 which would be GREAT except I still have holes that need patching in the floor and I don't want fumes in the car, my son will probably be riding with me by next summer.

You're right about those headers not fitting, he said off the 351 which is a little taller and wider they were hitting near his floorboards or firewall I guess.
I was wondering about Power Steering being in the way on mine and he doesn't think it's a risk at all...probably because tiny 302 giant engine bay that accepts big blocks....
![]() 08/09/2013 at 11:52 |

I'm debating the turn downs or side exhaust myself, since eventually I plan on putting in a Watt's link, which doesn't offer much room to work with. If I do, I think I want a slightly quieter exhaust system. My hearing is bad enough as it is.
![]() 08/09/2013 at 11:54 |

Oh my hearing is terrible...Super 44's and headers seems like the right decision...right?
Honestly I was going to go for the Super 40's, it's only a mild build 302 after all. But then I found out the 44's are more than 5 bucks cheaper each than the 40's. Save over 10 bucks and it's louder? OK

First thought: 'why has he put an Edelbrock carb on an MG Montego?'
I feel I've made that mistake before.
![]() 08/09/2013 at 14:11 |
|
LOL I think you have. It's still a 1968 Mercury Montego MX that looks like this:
And it's not an Edelbrock Carb. The air cleaner is Edelbrock, the Aluminum Performer RPM Intake Manifold is Edelbrock, but just to throw you a curve ball - the Carb is a Holley.
![]() 08/09/2013 at 14:16 |
|
I definitely think yours looks cooler.
I was typing out 'Holley carb' but I had a better squint at the picture. Won't the two separate parts slowly tear each other apart through a steady war of attrition? Pretty sure that's what happens.
![]() 08/09/2013 at 14:32 |

Hahahahaha. As funny as that is I believe the most common muscle car intake/carb combo would be an Edelbrock intake with a Holley carb.
Edelbrock makes unbeatable intakes.
Holley makes unbeatable carbs.
They attach and we win. Also if I hadn't been given the air intake/chrome housing for free from a friend I wouldn't have put it on my car. I plan for it to be black with red detail eventually - as seen in this post .

Dude - grab some roller-tipped rockers from Summit - they'll quiet everything up and give you moar powa!
![]() 08/12/2013 at 11:59 |
|
Ha, honestly once I got the new gaskets in place this thing was running beautifully. If I really wanted roller tipped rocker arms I could steal them from the extra heads you can see on I have for sale on craigslist lol.
It's a huge in depth process to get the valves set right on this motor involving hand cranking the motor to know which cylinder is up at top and it's more than I want to bother with. I have a huge power addition right now jumping from stock iron 2 barrel manifold and boring stock 2 barrel carb up to the Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake (aluminum) and a 4 barrel Holley. Exhaust is coming next (and hopefully within the next couple weeks) which will be true dual with long tube headers and 3 Super 44 Flowmasters.

Really? I've got a 302 and there's no preload or anything for my rockers - I just bolted on my new rollers and went. It's a strange engine though - 289Hipo caps, '68 Torino heads, '70 Mexican block, and it originally had a 2BBL intake.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 12:08 |
|
That's quite the mash up.
I was wondering about adjusting the rockers because a more than normal amount felt lose so I contacted my go-to mechanic. My dad. lol, seems silly to call Dad for stuff but he's an ASE Master Mechanic and has been for over 25 years, so it makes sense and I don't feel like a 15 year old calling home. He informed me of the complexity of adjusting them and that if I did hear a valve tick(or any other problems) to not touch them and told me the complex adjustment of them. And they are 1968 heads that came stock on the 2 barrel 302 Mercury Montego (sister of the Torino).
Hey if it's working don't question it too much though!
Don't know anyone in need of some E7 heads do you?

There's a bit of slop in my valve train as well, but once the lifters pump up it's gone. Also no, no one's looking for heads haha - I'm the only one that has a FoMoCo engine in the family.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 12:19 |
|
Yeah they just moved a bit and i found it strange the number of moveable vs non moveable. It sounded like it ran better than it ever has when I got it back together Saturday though so I guess nothing to worry about right?
Well it sounds like you have a fun one if it's going to be the only FoMoCo around.
What do you have this Ford Frankenmotor in?
![]() 08/12/2013 at 12:25 |
|
Yeah everything should be OK in your motor - Ford used non-adjustable valve trains to speed up production and decrease costs. My "frankenmotor" now has a 4BBL Typhoon (cheap Performer) intake, MSD ignition, Edelbrock 650 carb and headers and is installed in a '49 CJ3A - lots of fun in a short wheelbase.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 12:27 |
|
wow that must be NUTS! Is it bad that THIS was the shortest wheelbase of this car? The wagon was 5 inches longer. The door might be the length of a smart car...
![]() 08/12/2013 at 12:56 |
|
Quite the nice car you've got there. Yeah the wheelbase is 6.5' hahaha. Overall length is 10.5'.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 13:41 |
|
that looks like a blast, I imagine even more so with the top off.
Out of curiousity what made you go Ford for the engine? Normally when people swap in random V8's they go Chevy 350. I like the option/combo just curious!
![]() 08/12/2013 at 13:55 |

It came with the Ford haha - this was a swamp racer down in Kentucky before I had it. Came with the 2BBL 302 and a C4 transmission hooked up to the original Spicer transfercase, so I decided to keep it that way. The firewall is pushed back about 3-4" and the body is on a 2.75" lift just to clear the valve covers haha!
![]() 08/12/2013 at 15:00 |
|
Hahahahaha, a swamp racer! Wow, cool history for this truck! Hysterical that it came with the exact same engine/trans as my 68 Montego, I have the C4 too! Even with my minimal upgrades I chirp the tires in all gears when I stomp on it.
Hey what tires are you running on there? I see BF Goodrich All Terrain T/As? Rugged Terrains? We need to replace the tires on my wife's Jeep Commander and she wants an aggressive tread (as usual) and BF Goodrich All Terrain is at the top of my list.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 15:19 |
|
Those are 33"x12.5" BFG A/T's. The BFG's are good tires, but I'd also recommend Firestone Destination A/T's - they worked great on my Cherokee but the tread isn't too aggressive looking.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 15:32 |
|
I'll take a look at them if they work great, honestly the most she does with it is some dirt roads and snow (she'd love to do more though).
It is the Rugged Terrain not the Long Trail right for your BFG's?
![]() 08/12/2013 at 15:50 |
|
Not the rugged terrain or long trail - it's specifically the BFG All Terrain. They don't make them in your OE size (245/65R17), but you can get them in the next size up (245/70R17, or 31x10R17). Here's a link to a website for pricing . You should hit some Commander forums to see what size you can get away with without a lift.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 15:53 |
|
I've been on a couple and I'm pretty sure I can't get away with the 70's without at least the front end leveling kit.
Those are crazy expensive too. I have a feeling you get what you pay for though 'cause they look awesome!
![]() 08/12/2013 at 16:01 |
|
They are pretty bad ass, and yes 245/70R17 will fit with minimal to no rubbing. If you're too worried I would definitely try the Firestone Destination A/Ts - not too aggressive looking but they perform very well, and they can be had for around $160/$170.
![]() 08/12/2013 at 16:07 |
|
I see. Well minimal to no rubbing would be fine, I have a feeling the rubbing would only happen with some articulation at full lock anyhow. Discount tire has them for 207 each. I'll have to see if she's happy with the Firestones for less though.
It's tough having the cash to make both the 68 and her Jeep cool (and continue feeding our soon to be 7 month old...apparently babies like food)

I hear you - I'm saving for a house while fixing things on an E46 -_-
![]() 08/12/2013 at 16:20 |

Yeah, you're in for it too! If I can sell those heads I'll only be about 60 bucks away from my full exhaust- headers, mufflers, and pipes (it's gonna sound sooo great). Then I have to buy her tires before snow starts so since I live in Michigan I should get that done by October...you never know...
